Finding Art - Greg Chapman - "Biggest 'Ah-Ha!' Moments in Writing."

Just like writing, getting into comics and horror illustration is a matter of persistence and perseverance, and a hell of lot of networking.

It goes without saying that if you want to get into the horror field, whether it be writing or art, the first thing you should do is join a group that specialises in that area, organisations like the Horror Writers Association.

I used to draw a hell of a lot when I was younger, drawing comics and the like, but it wasn't until about five years ago that I picked up the pen and paintbrush after I joined the Australian Horror Writers Association. If it weren't for the AHWA and their networks I would never have landed the job of illustrator on Witch Hunts: A Graphic History of the Burning Times, written by Rocky Wood and Lisa Morton and I certainly wouldn't be getting all the design and illustration-related work I've received since.

So if I would offer any advice it would be to join an illustrators' organisation or spec-fic genre group, because you'll meet many like-minded individuals and many opportunities.

Deviantart.com might be a good place to start when trying to find other artists, and here are some that inspire: http://horrorillustrated.blogspot.com.au/
